Blogging often seems like a thrilling adventure, a platform for creative expression that connects creators with readers. However, as I learned, the journey can have its challenges. For many bloggers, including myself, stepping away from writing can be linked to the stark reality of seeking financial security in life.
The Pull of the Mighty Buck
At its core, my decision to pause blogging was influenced by financial pressures. In my experience, it became clear that while passion fuels creativity, monetary compensation is essential. After five years of promoting authors and their stories for free, my blog's growth stagnated. I found myself needing to make a critical choice: step back and reassess my blogging future.
To illustrate, countless bloggers face similar struggles. In a survey, 65% reported that they do not earn enough to sustain their blogging efforts. This statistic sharply highlights the need for a solid income strategy, especially for those dedicating significant hours to their craft. Ultimately, I was forced to confront this reality.
Pulling Back the Curtain
When I started my blog, ROMANTIC CRUSH JUNKIES, in 2009, I dove into a world filled with unknowns. Managing a blog often required pouring in time, sometimes up to sixteen hours a day. This included everything from responding to emails to coordinating with publishers.

This intensive commitment was a double-edged sword. While I derived joy from sharing captivating stories, I was also caught in a taxing routine that brought minimal financial reward. From my perspective as a blogger, readers saw the polished content but rarely understood the exhaustive work behind each post.
A Fork in the Road
By 2014, I confronted my restlessness and yearned for change. At forty-five, I reentered education after nearly three decades, pursuing a creative writing degree. I was ready for new challenges after years spent in front of the computer.
As life unfolded, I graduated in 2017, but with a liberal arts degree focused on behavioral sciences instead. While this was a pivotal step, it left me feeling more lost than fulfilled.
Embracing the Unknown
With my degree in hand, I faced another decision. I was accepted into the University of Pennsylvania’s anthropology program. At forty-seven and a grandfather, moving six hours away for my studies felt overwhelming, yet the prospect of exploring new interests was invigorating.
I realized I needed to embrace this challenge. I made the decision to relaunch Romantic Crush Junkies, marking the beginning of a trilogy of book review blogs.

With renewed energy, I found myself reflecting on past experiences. I had learned from previous challenges, which better equipped me to navigate the fine line between passion and practicality. Despite my initial excitement, I recognized that the obstacles remained.
A New Perspective
My re-entrance into blogging made me realize that the challenge was not just about the content. It was about creating a sustainable model that could support my goals. How could I turn this passion into a venture that succeeded financially?
Many content creators struggle with this balance. According to recent research, 70% of bloggers admit that their motivations can wane when faced with the pressures of generating income. I often pondered, "What’s the end goal?" It became clear that the emotional and creative investments I've made should lead to tangible returns.
A Time for Reflection
As I took a step back, the importance of connection became evident. My experiences with fellow bloggers and readers were enriching, but I noticed that many interactions felt more transactional than genuine. I began seeking relationships built on shared interests and mutual support instead of merely promoting others.
By pursuing these connections, I discovered a community that shared my struggles and aspirations. This led me to relaunch my blog with a renewed focus on what truly mattered to me.
The Path Ahead
My decision to step back from blogging has ultimately opened me to new possibilities. The lessons I’ve learned around financial sustainability, community building, and personal fulfillment have reshaped my approach moving forward.
The real impetus for my pause stemmed from financial concerns, but it transformed into a period of deep reflection. I reassessed my priorities, set more realistic goals, and redefined what success means for me.
As I embark on the next chapter of my blogging journey, I carry a wealth of experiences. I have also gained a clearer understanding of my original motivations. The path may not always be straightforward; it is filled with twists and turns that can lead to unexpected opportunities.

Throughout this experience, I aim to inspire others to recognize their worth and embrace the journey of self-investment. Whether in blogging or any other endeavor, resilience is key. With every step, we grow stronger and more focused on where we wish to head next.
As you forge your creative paths, remember that it's perfectly okay to pause, reflect, and change direction. The beauty of this ongoing journey lies not just in the destination but in every moment we encounter along the way.
